King of the Mountain''
Peter Brock killed in WA racing accident
Nine-times Bathurst 1000 winner and Australian motor racing legend Peter Brock
has been killed while competing in the Targa West Tarmac Rally in Western
Australia. In 1997, Brock retired from full-time V8
Super cars racing and launched the Peter Brock Foundation, which provides support
to a wide range of community programs.
He is survived by his three children. Brock won Australia's
premier touring car event at Bathurst a record 10 times, and held more pole
positions and won more races than any other driver since the inception of the
Australian Touring Car Championship in 1960. He retired in the late 1990s. His
great-great-uncle, Henry James, was a founder of the RACV and organised
Australia's first motor sport event - the 1905 Sydney to Melbourne reliability
trial.
In 1969, the manager of the newly formed Holden Dealer Team, Harry Firth, gave
Brock his break with an offer to drive at Bathurst in a Monaro GTS 350.Brock won
his first Bathurst title in 1972 driving solo in a Torana XU1.
He was nicknamed "Peter Perfect" and later became known as the "King of the
Mountain" after his success in the endurance races at Bathurst.
19/9/06 Thousands line streets to
farewell Brock
The Dean of St Paul's, the Very Reverend David Richardson, read a sermon and the
hymn Abide With Me brought the memorial to a close. Premier Steve Bracks, Lord
Mayor John So and Federal Opposition Leader Kim Beazley attended the funeral.
Champion touring car drivers Allan Moffat and Craig Lowndes, Dick Johnston,
Larry Perkins, Russell Ingall also paid their respects. Other sporting
greats included swimmer Grant Hackett and basketball Andrew Gaze, British Open
golf winner Ian Baker-Finch and marathon runner Steve Moneghetti. Liberal leader
Ted Baillieu sent Education spokesman Martin Dixon to represent him. Federal
Sports Minister Rod Kemp represented Prime Minister John Howard. The main
straight of the Clipsal 500 street circuit in Adelaide will be known as Brock
Straight in honour of the motor racing legend. South Australian Premier, Mike
Rann, said Brock was a legend to many. "There is probably no-one in Australia
who's had such a positive influence on the development of motor sport than Peter
Brock,"

the legend still lives on to an icon by HOLDEN Australia,

1000 1969 saw the introduction of the HT
and with it came the Australian 253ci and 308ci V8 in addition to the imported

motor that boasted a 300HP output.
When Holden took the covers off its new Monaro sports coupe at the Sydney Motor
Show, it was
just over 33 years since the first Monaro made its debut - and national front
page news - in
July, 1968.In 1969, the first year
under Harry Firth, Holden Dealer Team Monaro 350s came first (Bond/Roberts) and
third
(West/Brock) outright in the Hardie Ferodo 500 at Bathurst. Regarded as
the most sophisticated
of the early Monaro models, the HG is today one of the rarest and most
sought-after of the
charismatic Holden coupes. The HG GTS a meaner, sleeker look. Away from the
track, Holden built
extra compliance into the Monaro rear suspension, boosting GTS 350 long distance
touring
capabilities and comfort. The HG GTS 350 manual, with its crisp driving feel and
Salisbury
limited slip diff, stood as the definitive road car for several Monaro
generations.
