Beechey at The top of muscle car cream list

A 1960s yellow Monaro has been named Australia’s best ever muscle car

Holden has topped the list as having produced the top Competition Muscle Car of All-Time, according to the latest issue of the respected Australian Muscle Car magazine.

Norm Beechey’s 1970 Australian Touring Car Championship-winning 350 cubic inch Monaro was voted at the top of the list; which featured some of the classic muscle cars from a golden period of Australian motor racing.

It was the first Holden, and indeed Australian-built car, to seal the ATCC title and the man himself was one of the inaugural inductees into the AVESCO Hall of Fame in 1999.

The famous yellow Monaro, sponsored by Shell, was also the first V8-powered car to win the Australian Touring Car Championship and flew the flag for Australia as it saw off challengers including the American Mustangs of Allan Moffat and Bob Jane.

“The judging criteria was based on racing achievements, historical significance and sheer muscle car charisma and Beechey’ s Monaro certainly topped all of those,” said  AM editor Mark Oastler.

In all, 12 Holdens featured the 25 carlist, with the latest model Monaro Nations Cup racer, which won the Bathurst 24 Hour in 2002 and 2003, already regarded as a classic and scoring a place on the list despite being just three years since it debuted.
