SS Orama

8th June 1940, Troopship Orama goes down by the stern taking 19 men with her,
as a German destroyer sails past.
Survivors of the Orama climb aboard the Hipper into captivity. 219 Merchant
Seamen would spend the next five years at Milag Nord from this one ship alone.
Overcrowding in Ilag XIII at Wülsburg having made conditions steadily worse, in
October 1941 the German authorities transferred the British internees to a camp
at Tost, not far from Lamsdorf, in Silesia. Known as Ilag VIII, it already held
over 1000 British internees, including 200 of the crew of the SS Orama.
